ITAM Road To Maturity
Our Software Asset Management (SAM) program progresses through three phases: Crawl, Walk and Run. Each phase has specific goals that are detailed below.
SAM Maturity Phases

CRAWL
- Establish a healthy CMDB and platform that is optimized for SAM
- Identify systems to discover installation/usage data (Discovery, InTune, SGCs)
- Focus on end-user computing and SaaS integrations for which licensing isn’t complex
- Establish SAM roadmap
- Begin establishing processes, procedures, resources and to execute on the SAM roadmap

WALK
- Begin automating the processes and procedures established during the Crawl stage
- Move to more complex licensing models in datacentre environments, BYOL use cases and additional SaaS publishers
- Implement software metering and reclamation processes
- Identify overlapping software
- Right size software estate through pro-active license compliance reporting
- Ensure alignment with SAM roadmap

RUN
- Use mature, standardized and automated processes across all phases of the SAM lifecycle
- Use standard catalogue and on/off boarding processes to control software spend
- Provide software to employees through automated on-demand mechanisms
